A Conversation With... Gary Aspden about adidas SPEZIAL SS18 Drop 2

25 April 2019

A second instalment of footwear inspired by the "Second Summer of Love."

Inspired by the sea of change within British subculture in the late 1980's, where the sound of squelchy 303s and 808s, and the Haçienda brought Acid House to the fore, adidas Creative Consultant Gary Aspden takes us through the second drop of the much heralded adidas SPEZIAL line for SS18.

Delving into the Three Stripes enviable archives, Aspden has mixed his real-life experiences with era-specific reference points, pulling out integral pieces worn at illegal parties and raves of the time and adding his unmistakable slant to present a collection of footwear styles that are both culturally and commercially relevant today.

Taking inspiration from the recently reissued Handball Top style, the Handball Kreft SPZL takes attention to detail to lofty new heights with repositioned Three Stripe decals to the side panels, contrast dark navy stitching and dark brown gum tooling.

Riffing off the popularity of the ZX series during the 80's, the ZX 280 sees a literally 1:1 recreation of the classic runner. The sneaker is decked out in a tonal Navy and Grey colourway with Icey Lemon accents, which also recreates the colour arrangement of one of Warnett's first ever pair of Three Stripes.

A staple of any Spezial collection, the minimalist Lacombe SPZL has been stripped down even further with it signature Bottle Green branding at the tongue changed to a neutral gold that complements the shoe's leather luxury leather construction.

The CLMBA SPZL is a 1:1 recreation of the archival Columbia show, which, alongside the classic Harvard and Galaxy styles, we renowned for their three-plug suspension system that were customisable to your taste. The CLMBA takes this feature and teams it with plush nubuck uppers, D-ring lacing system, and silver stripes and heel tab detail.

The second colourway of the Padiham SPZL, sees the vibrant colourway from drop one replaced with a rustic tones that hark back to signature athleisure styles, which lets the shoe's considered silhouette stand out.

adidas SPEZIAL SS18 drop 2 is now available to register for at END. Launches.
