The brainchild of coach Bill Bowerman and athlete Philip Knight, the brand was originally called Blue Ribbon Sports when it was founded in Portland in 1964. After the runner Jeff Johnson suggested the name Nike—a nod to the Greek Goddess of victory—the label changed and the journey to the top of the game began.
