BRAND PROFILE: MONCLER

The world of Moncler is much more than just its iconic padded outerwear, founded in 1952 the Milan based label creates clothing and outerwear designed with premium materials and distinct style.

Deep diving into the brand’s history and formative years, this profile will look at how the brand sources and uses its materials for its optimal outerwear that provides protection both on the piste and in the city.

Where does the name Moncler come from?

An abbreviation of Monestier-de-Clermont, Moncler started life in a mountain village near Grenoble. The creation of René Ramillon and Andrè Vincent, the pair originally gave life to the infamous down jacket, used by workers to pair over their overalls, the protective garments offered high resistance to the harshest climates and were even put to the test in a variety of expeditions.

Later transitioning into clothing for skiers and mountaineers, Moncler has now made a name for itself both on and off the slopes.

Who is the Creative Director of Moncler?

Acquiring the label in 2003, Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini began a strategy of global expansion in the luxury goods sector. Repositioning the brand, collections began to take on a more distinct and exclusive style with previous products reimagined in a versatile light for use both on and off the piste.

“Our purpose inspires us to keep changing, whilst always retaining the essence that makes us unique. It’s our reason to be: to unleash the extraordinary in everybody.”

Remo Ruffini, Moncler Chairman and CEO.

Underpinning the brand’s concept of luxury, Ruffini heads Moncler with a philosophy that celebrates tradition, uniqueness, quality, creativity and innovation. Though the label is constantly evolving, the motto “born in the mountains, living in the city” still rings true.

THE FELT PATCH MONCLER LOGO

What is the Moncler Logo?

A felt patch, usually appearing on the sleeve of a product, the Moncler logo is now an icon in its own right. In a semi circular figure, a symbol depicting two mountain peaks also doubles as the label’s M initial.

What is the inspiration behind the Moncler badge?

Detailed with tricolour accents to reference the label’s place of birth, France, the country's unofficial symbol, the cockerel, is situated behind. The label began using this emblem after becoming the official supplier of the French downhill ski team at the Grenoble Winter Olympics 1968.

MONCLER SIZING

Moncler pieces aren’t just for the season, they are for a lifetime. So before you invest, finding out what size is suited to you is of paramount importance.  Here’s everything you need to know about Moncler’s sizing:

How are Moncler jackets designed to be fit?

Iconic jackets, such as the Maya tends are easier to size as it fits true to size. However lighter coats and gilets such as the Gui and Tibb are crafted with form-fitting shapes, therefore the general consensus is to take a size up, particularly as the sleeves are often cut to quite a short length.

It is also worth considering how you’ll use the jacket; most of Moncler’s Jackets aren’t made with stretch fabrics so if you’ll be using yours during outdoor activities, specifically skiing, it may be that taking your normal size restricts your movement.

Does Moncler Clothing fit true to size?

No, Moncler’s extensive ranges of polos, t-shirts, and jumpers usually fit small. Arriving in a slim fit we therefore suggest sizing up if this isn't the style for you. Those into streetwear looks may decide to size up one or two sizes for an oversized fit.

What else do you need to consider with Moncler Sizing?

Before selecting a size, considering what you will wear underneath is of paramount importance. If you layer your outfits to stay warm during colder months, sizing up is suggested. With garments that already have a snug fit, layering will restrict your movement, especially down the piste.

If a jacket is insulating, wearing a t-shirt or slim-fit sweater underneath might suffice, in this case your normal size would be appropriate.

How do you care for Moncler Clothing?

For the majority of Moncler Jackets, dry cleaning is recommended, however always refer to the care labels inside your garment for specific cleaning instructions.

If instructed by the care label, items may be cleaned at home, when doing so, pay particular attention to:

• Not overload the washing machine, if washing machine cleaning permitted

• Avoid soaking

• Dry flat

However, furs and leathers should be entrusted to a specialist.
