It started with Yvon Chouinard hammering out stronger, reusable climbing pitons in the 1950s — the first hint of what would make Patagonia famous: gear built to last, designed to reduce harm, and rooted in a deep respect for the outdoors. That small workshop eventually grew into the Patagonia we know today, shaped by Chouinard’s life spent climbing, surfing, and protecting the wild places that inspired him. 

By the 1970s, the brand moved into Patagonia clothing and set itself apart with recycled materials, fair‑labour commitments, and activism‑led business decisions that made sustainability a core practice rather than a marketing angle.
