Everything began in the Swiss Alps in 2010. Retired triathlete Olivier Bernhard set out to disrupt the performance footwear industry, trying to find a way to bring a totally new sensation to running. His early experiments were as unconventional as his vision, strapping pieces of garden hose to prototypes, chasing the feeling of running on clouds.

Joined by friends David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, the On team picked up pace in their pursuit for perfection. FINDING THE RIGHT ON RUNNING SHOE: A COMPLETE GUIDE

Cushioning, stability, heel-to-toe drop, pronation — there’s a lot to think about when choosing the right running shoes. To make it easier, we’ve broken down what matters most so you can pick the perfect pair of On trainers for your running style.

How do I pick the right running shoes for me?

Whether you’re looking for explosive speed, long distance efficiency or a daily pair to gently clock up the miles, the best place to start is to consider what kind of surface you’ll be running on. Will you be tackling muddy, uneven trails, using a treadmill in the gym, or sticking to the tarmac? 

Next, think about your goals and what style of running sensation will benefit you best. On running shoes fall under four main categories to suit every runner: 

• Stable: Suitable for runners of all levels, designed to deliver a supportive, stable feel.
• Neutral: Rolls with the natural movement of the foot for smoother strides.
• Forward Rolling: Made to propel you forwards with powerful energy return.
• Speed: The most explosive, responsive propulsion — especially suited to race day.

The last step goes without saying: try them on! Make sure to wear your running socks, and check for arch support, toe room, and flexibility. The fit should feel secure, yet natural.

Understanding your gait and choosing your cushioning

The level of cushion that will work best for you while you run is generally down to your foot shape and your gait. The way you strike the ground and distribute your weight can lead to injury in the long run if you’re not wearing shoes that support you in the right places.

The easiest way to find your running gait at home is to check the wear on your running shoes. It’ll give you a pretty good idea if any areas are taking on more strain than they should. If you spot extra wear on the inside of the heel, under the ball of the foot and the big toe, it’s likely that you overpronate. If there’s lots of wear on the outside of the sole, underpronation is probably the cause.

If you have any concerns about your running gait, a medical professional, such as a podiatrist, can provide specific, expert advice regarding your individual needs.

What does it mean if you overpronate or underpronate?

Overpronation:

If your feet have very flat arches, it’s likely that you’ll overpronate as you run. This means your heel can roll further inwards than it should, leading to extra stress on your knees, joints and the inside of your foot. To avoid problems like shin splints, hip pain, achilles tendinitis, or heel spurs, go for stability-focused shoes like the supportive Cloudrunner, Cloudstratus or Cloudflyer. 

Underpronation:

If you have very high arches, this can put a lot of stress on the outside of your feet and your smaller toes, causing your foot to roll outwards on impact. The result is poorer shock absorption which may trigger injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and bunions. If this sounds like you, cushioning is your best friend! It can help you give you the additional support you need and help reduce outward rolling. Opt for plush models like the Cloudswift and the Cloudspark.

Neutral:

Neutral runners distribute weight evenly with every strike, meaning shock absorption-related injuries are less likely to occur. When your foot lands, it follows an S-shaped pattern from the outer heel to the big toe to support your body weight effectively. Neutral runners can opt for pretty much any running shoe that best suits their needs. Do On shoes fit true to size? 

As a general rule, On shoes fit true to size. Especially if you’re opting for a pair designed for everyday use, you’re good to select your usual size. Your feet may swell a little if you’re running, so going half a size bigger than your daily shoes is always a good idea to give a little extra room in the toebox. It is also recommended that you go half a size up in On’s waterproof range, as these tend to fit a little tighter due to the waterproof fabrics used.

How long will a pair of On running shoes last?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, it depends on factors like your running style, weight, and the surfaces you train on. Most running shoes last around 300 miles (roughly 482 km), though this can vary by model and materials. High-performance options like the Cloudboom Strike are built for explosive speed on race day, so they’ll naturally wear out faster than everyday styles such as the Cloud 6.

Is there a difference between men’s and women’s sizing for On?

The primary difference is that men’s styles are slightly wider. However, don’t feel restricted to a certain gender! The different styles can all be worn by men or women. Just be sure to check the size guide before you purchase. If you need to order a couple of sizes to try, no problem — END. offers free returns.

How do you clean On shoes?

Keeping your On shoes clean helps them perform better and last longer. Skip the washing machine and tumble dryer; heat and detergents can damage seams and structure. Instead, brush off dirt after each run, and when a deeper clean is needed, hand wash with warm water and mild detergent. Remove laces and insoles first, rinse thoroughly, and let them air dry at room temperature with paper inside to maintain shape. Once dry, reassemble and you’re good to hit the road again.
