Montbell’s story starts with Isamu Tatsuno — a young Japanese climber obsessed with moving light, fast, and with absolute intention. After tackling some of Europe’s most unforgiving faces, he came home wanting gear that matched the way he climbed: minimal weight, maximum performance. In 1975, at twenty‑eight, he turned that philosophy into Montbell, teaming up with friends to build equipment that solved real problems outdoors. Their first breakthrough was a synthetic sleeping bag that stayed warm even when soaked — a small idea with life‑saving impact.
