Taking inspiration from the ideas of nonconformity, Belgian designer Martin Margiela founded the luxury haute couture house Maison Margiela in 1988. Embracing creativity rooted in authenticity, community, and self-expression, the label focuses on the relationship between clothing and how it’s worn. Now under the creative direction of Glenn Martens, the artisanal atelier challenges tradition by reinterpreting and repurposing past elements into new forms. This process creates a dialogue between past and present, emphasising individuality and authenticity at every stage.

Maison Margiela approaches everyday dressing through a conceptual lens — taking familiar wardrobe pieces and reworking them with unexpected proportions, subtle deconstruction and its signature quiet anonymity. T‑shirts, hoodies and knitwear come with the house’s considered twists: raw edges, inside‑out detailing or the discreet four‑stitch moniker that lets the clothes speak for themselves.

Footwear carries the same design language. From the Maison Margiela Replica — a now‑iconic sneaker inspired by 1970s athletic styles — to sculptural boots and pared‑back silhouettes, each pair channels the brand’s ability to make the ordinary feel elevated. The Tabi toe silhouette is one of Margiela’s most recognisable designs — a split‑toe shape inspired by 15th‑century Japanese tabi socks traditionally worn with wooden geta sandals. It made its debut in the house’s SS89 runway show, instantly setting Margiela apart and it remains a cult favourite today.
