At some point, summer has to come to an end for normal life to start again. After crazy temperatures, a serious lack of rain, and weeks of wondering why we don’t have air con, there’s a fair few of us ready to welcome autumn with open arms.
Our Season Refresh series exists as a blueprint for dressing through the season transition. Over the coming weeks, we’re covering the major style movements that END. buyers have seen guiding the latest collections across menswear and womenswear. They’re a solid framework when it comes to building out the new rotation.
Last week, we focused on the concept of the colour brown. Across brand showrooms and new-season shows, our buyers kept seeing the colour as the foundation to the collections leading the conversation. This week, we turn our attention to statement outerwear. Autumn is when we get to really start dressing again, and outerwear is arguably the most exciting part of that. Picks from Stone Island, Barbour, Hosbjerg, and Maison Margiela prove that there are no rules here: bright colours work, muted colours also work if the fabric is talking. The moral of the story is go wild.
Ultimately, Stone Island design descends from military influences. The brand’s wide range of overshirts and light jackets are some of the clearest signs of that. Take the Nylon-TC Coach Jacket, for example, which is cut from a satin-like nylon with a warp-rib weave that gives the classic silhouette eye-catching texture.
Maison Margiela actually functions on surprisingly similar values as Stone Island, even though the product is drastically different. This bomber, rooted in military style, has been recontextualised with a range of unexpected details. For starters, it’s reversible, with a quilted layer inside, and beyond that, seams and buttons distributed through the design modernise the time-tested structure.
Two icons of British design come together. With the help of Paul Smith’s signature colour pops, the Barbour Key Transport Jacket becomes a visual anchor for the season. Cropped through the body, it’s a layering powerhouse as well as being a proper shield against rain with Barbour’s world-famous waxed cotton.
Born in Copenhagen, Hosbjerg has become impossible to ignore worldwide in recent seasons. Pieces like this Sally Jacket in a glossy burgundy faux leather embody its appeal. Cut for a boxy fit, it’s super easy to style while the aged texture of the construction makes it feel like a genuine vintage find.
