In the mid-1990s, the elusive Belgian designer Martin Margiela came across pairs of German army standard-issue indoor training shoes in an Austrian army surplus store. Drawn to their simple, unmemorable, and utilitarian look, he bought up the vintage stock and took them to the runway. Honouring the brand’s obsession with historical fashion, Margiela named it the "Replica", and it has since become one of the brand’s most noticeable ‘blank canvases’, reworked each season in different finishes.
