The Air Max 180 represents a landmark moment in the history of Nike Footwear. Nike has been incorporating air cushioning units into the soles of their performance footwear since 1979, forever changing the relationship between athletes and what they put on their feet. Not wanting to rest on their laurels, Nike’s team of experts worked throughout the 1980’s at their headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon to push the boundaries of this groundbreaking technology. The Air Max 180 was what they came up with.

Nike called on two of the industry’s most innovative and influential footwear designers, Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore, to help realize the full potential of the 180. An experiment with the limits of the system led them to create an air cushioning bag with a 50% larger volume than any previous model, offering an unprecedented level of shock protection. Nike’s drive to create the best product possible ensured that the Air Max 180 would set the precedent for over two decades of constant innovation in the realm of performance footwear.

This innovation provided the AM 180 with the feature that not only gave it its name, but defined almost every aspect of its design. Hatfield and Kilgore discovered that this larger cushion allowed them not only more support, but the opportunity for 180 degrees of that support to be visible. The rest of the shoes design was intended to compliment this. The AM 180 features a predominantly white, clean colourway with stabs of colour all gesturing towards the revolutionary sole unit.

In tribute to this legendary shoe, Nike have released this version recreating that iconic colourway and have given it their unique vintage treatment, in reference to its celebrated heritage. We think it looks fantastic.
